Power of the Force 40th Anniversary – Part I

mm

I’m holding out hope that we see a couple Power of the Force carded figures revealed this year during its 40th anniversary. I was born in 1980 and this is the card back I remember as a child, so it hold’s a special little place in my heart. For those born around this time we may not remember seeing the Original Trilogy in the theaters but we sure watched it on VHS (until we wore out the tape). I remember having taped versions from HBO as well; queue the HBO Theme. One benefit of being born around this time was getting to enjoy the toys of both the 80’s AND early 90’s. For me, those included M.A.S.K., Masters of the Universe, Centurions, The Real Ghost Busters, Crash Test Dummies, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, World Wrestling Federation figures, Dino Riders, ToyBiz Batman, and so many more.

As fun as this time period was no toy line had a greater impact than the Kenner’s Star Wars toys and since it’s the 40th anniversary of Power of the Force, what better way then to pay homage to it in the very line that celebrates the vintage era. Yak Face that came with the HasLab Sail Barge is the only POTF card back we have in the line and one of the few recent modern figure that came with a coin (Droids Fett, 3PO, R2). Coins are integral to this line and a big part of the reason Star Wars figure collectors want to celebrate it. POTF should celebrate some Original 96 (O96) that debuted in this line, and as TVC was always meant to do, continue with figures from movies and media beyond the OT. It would also be great to see some figures that should have debut if the line continued. This is just a start of a few posts I’ll make throughout the year that highlight things I’d love to see in POTF packaging.

Figures that Debuted During POTF

Sim Aloo Sweet Sweet Sim Aloo! – This was the only time Sim Aloo (Imperial Dignitary) was released and we have been waiting 40 years for a modern definitive version. What better way than offering him on his original card back with coin. Since he’d have some soft goods robes they could leverage lower body tooling of an existing character. Just please use one with rocker ankles so we can get him to stand/balance easier.

Anakin Skywalker – This was the first carded release of Anakin Skywalker even though he was a mail away during the ROTJ line. Should they recreate the portrait film out or do him right with a Sebastian Shaw force ghost still from the movie?

Amanaman – Only released 2 times in the line and it’s been 24 years since the last one. If Amanaman is made again they must come on a POTF card!

EV9-D9 – Crossing into newer media – The Mandalorian and voiced by Mark Hamill EV9-D9 should come on a The Mandalorian card back and then exclusive Power of The Force card back with coin.

A Figure We Always Want More Of

Gamorrean Guard – Give us more Gammies. The 2019 reissue of the Gamorrean Gauard was not enough. The price is climbing on this reissue and collectors continue to ask for more (we always want more). With a coin on POTF is just a no brainer. The 1985 card is a rarer POTF card and collectors would welcome this into their collection in modern form.

Debuts Figures If the Line Didn’t End

Shasa Tiel – I believe if they were going to make more character debuts in the Power of the Force line Shasa Teil would have been one of the alient characters chosen next. An Ishi Tib alien was sorely missing from what made the Kenner line so special – all the aliens and background characters they made/chose.

Figures If the Line Continued Today

Baze Malbus, Baylan Skoll, Shin Haiti – I’d love to see newer media on POTF cards too. I chose Shin and Baylan who are coming this year during the 40th of POTF line and Baze Balbus that I’d love to just see in the line some day.

More to come on this topic and please let me know in the comments how you feel about the POTF line and what you’d like to see in it.
